ECZEMA
.

Eczema is a condition that causes areas of the skin to become red, itchy and scaly. Its cause is unknown and it can affect any part of the body. Eczema can occur in month-old babies and persist through adulthood.

The condition may be short-lived (acute) or long term (chronic). It is characterised by redness, itching, scaling and lesions with discharge. Eczema is not contagious.

In chronic eczema, the skin will often be reddened and scaly and may also have small blisters. The lesions can be intensely itchy, leading to skin damage through scratching and the risk of other forms of secondary infections.
