A comedone (or comedo), the primary sign of acne, consists of a dilated (widened) hair follicle filled with keratin squamae (skin debris), bacteria, and sebum (oil).
Both blackheads and whiteheads start out as micro-comedones before becoming skin blemishes, open-comedones, closed-comedones or even giant comedones.
Blackheads: Occurs when trapped sebum and bacteria are partially exposed and turn black due to melanin. Blackheads can last for a long time because their contents drain slowly to the surface.
Whiteheads: A comedone that has an obstructed opening to the skin. A closed comedone may rupture and cause a low-grade skin inflammatory reaction in the area. |
